Summer Leadership

Camper Care Team

The Head Counselor role is central to how we build community and integrate campers into bunk life at Camp Pembroke. As part of our leadership team, the Head Counselors manage the camp units (Upper, Middle, Lower). Bunk counselors work with the Head Counselors to ensure the best possible living experience for each camper and staff person. Head Counselors are also available to respond to parent questions and concerns.

Each of these Head Counselors – all of whom are experienced teachers in the “off-season” –  bring creativity and new ideas to the job. They love spending summers with our campers, learning and growing together to continue to enhance the sisterhood that is Camp Pembroke, and count the days until camp.

Melissa (Mason) Ginsberg has taught fourth and fifth grades for 19 years, and credits Camp Pembroke with inspiring her to become a teacher.  She has spent 17 summers on Lake Oldham – as camper, counselor, Athletic Department Head, and Head Counselor.

Deb (Bornstein) Hickey began her own Pembroke journey at age 9, and continued as a camper and counselor and Head Counselor for 13 years. Deb is excited to return for her 17th summer at camp! She has taught science to seventh graders for 17 years.

Summer Staff

The Pembroke staff undertakes with great care its responsibility to nurture and care for our campers. Each staff person works hard to serve as a role model and to make a positive impact each day.

Pembroke administrative and supervisory personnel are camping professionals and educators with many years of experience working with children, especially girls and young women. Many Pembroke counselors were ‘Brokies themselves, and each of those came through our Dor L’Dor capstone program which combines an Israel experience with counselor training. Some of our counselors come from abroad, including a contingent from Israel, which greatly enhances the camp experience.

We select our staff for their experience, maturity, creativity, and sense of responsibility. Our summer staff attends a week-long Staff Orientation, in addition to individual specialty training to improve teaching skills. Ongoing training continues throughout the summer with seminars and mentoring.

“We are always impressed by the counselor staff, and the range of activities.” ~ Pembroke parent

Year-round Administration & Colleagues

Amy and Becca are supported by the staff of The Cohen Camps, the family of three Jewish overnight camps which also includes Camp Tel Noar and Camp Tevya. The three camps share a year-round office and collaborate on a shared vision, pooling ideas and refining best practices to all of our campers’ great benefit.
